What you need
Each player needs one shooter marble. You also need a shared group of smaller target marbles, a flat playing surface and a way to mark a circle.
A shooter is usually larger than the target marbles and should feel comfortable between your thumb and forefinger.
Set up the game
- Draw a clear circle on dirt, sand or pavement.
- Place the target marbles in a compact group near the center.
- Choose the shooting order.
- Agree on scoring and whether the match is friendly or for keeps.
Regional rules vary, so settle any differences before the first shot.
How to shoot a marble
Rest a knuckle on the ground. Curl your forefinger around the shooter and use your thumb to flick it forward. Your hand should finish behind the boundary line.
Aim before adding power
A direct hit transfers force. A glancing hit moves the target at an angle and can leave your shooter in a better position for the next turn.
Read the shooting guideBasic rules for marbles
- Players shoot in the agreed order.
- The shot begins from outside the ring or from the previous resting position.
- A target scores only after it fully leaves the circle.
- A hand may not cross the shooting line before release.
- The round ends when the ring is empty or the agreed turn limit is reached.
How to win
The player who removes the most target marbles wins. In a casual match, return every marble to its owner. In a for-keeps match, players keep the marbles they win.
